It is another joyous offseason for the Titans, it seems. Last off season, they drafted quarterback Marcus Mariota, which instantly sparked hope in the Titans fan base and organization. This time around, they finalized an astonishing trade with the Eagles for running back DeMarco Murray, which has renewed the hope after a deplorable 3-13 season in 2015.
Jon Robinson has made a handful of key signings this offseason, making it clear he wants to win and wants to win now. The solution to making Mariota successful is to build around him, and it seems that’s what Robinson is attempting. However, there’s one critical position he hasn’t even targeted, despite the fact that a few at this position has been let go
The offensive tackle position.
Robinson has yet to address it. Earlier in the offseason, he mentioned that the free agency period should have some impact on the draft. Turning his head on the position now could mean they draft Laremy Tunsil later. But, maybe not with the first overall pick.
Reports indicate that the Titans are still looking to trade it away. That could possibly happen where they’ll still be able to draft Tunsil along with other talented players. There’s no doubt that the offensive line needs to be addressed. When the line played good, Mariota played great – even breaking records along the way. Robinson even said the Superbowl “came down to the lines,” so he knows.
The addition of talent gained in free agency can only go so far. The draft will be important for the Titans. Will they draft heavily on offense for Mariota? Will they go heavily on the defense? Drafting potential stars for Mariota, whether it’s offensive linemen or wide receivers, is important. Giving defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau young talent to work with is equally as important.
Robinson knew what he was in for when joining the Titans: a fun project with a promising quarterback and a veteran, hall of fame bound defensive coordinator. The 2016 Titans should be fun to watch.
